...latest issue, designed by Brian O'Doherty, should find his senses fully exhausted. There is the script of a "structural play" that diagrams the movements of the performers, who are instructed to costume themselves in "white bodystockings or leotards, with tight-fitting hoods covering the ears and featureless silver masks." There is a do-it-yourself poem in which the author provides the ingredients (adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, gerunds, capitalized words, etc.) and leaves the composition to the reader. There is a recording of percussion instruments with the sensible instructions that it be played so low "you almost...
Harvard's built some pretty great stuff, notably the Carpenter Center and Gropius's Bauhaus building, Harkness Commons. But it doesn't try so hard every time and sometimes it just flops. The McKay Labs (upper right) are functional but featureless. And Yamasaki's (he later built the Woodrow Wilson School building at Princeton) William James Hall (left) is visually unbalanced and doesn't fit into its surroundings. The Loeb (above) just sits there but then really makes it at night. Hilles Library, too, is neat in the dark but scares the people who live across Garden St. Sert...
Gone are the days when small chil dren played contentedly with featureless rag dolls. Today's vogue is for realism, and toymakers now turn out dolls that can walk, talk, cry and even wet. And he endows it with a kind of mordant humor that is much admired by most young West Coast artists. "If you see a bird flying," he says, "it has all the qualities of being a beautiful bird. Then if you find a dead bird, it makes you wonder what is the real bird...
Unlike most of his contemporaries, the tempestuous Lewis championed the intellect against the senses, ultimately turning on all his friends for deserting rationality. He had a horror of the "surging, ecstatic featureless chaos which is being set up as an ideal, in-place of the noble exactitude and harmonious proportions of the European scientific ideal." His own ideal was ancient Greece. "The dialogues of Plato," he wrote in Time and Western Man, "have not an effluvia of feminine scent; nor do they erect pointers on all the pathways of the mind, waving frantically back to the gonadal ecstasies...
