...believe Western credibility is alive and well, despite all evidence to the contrary -- despite feckless diplomacy, a chain of broken promises and empty threats, mounting rancor among the allies and a record on Bosnia so altogether contradictory as to very nearly beggar understanding? What really stood out in red on the Brussels agenda was the unsettling truth that the crisis is about not only Bosnia but also that much vaunted chimera, the new world order...

...were something like the Pope of black America and had the moral authority to make such suggestions, I would propose that no African American use the terms racism or racist. The words are a feckless indulgence, corrosive to blacks and whites alike and to relations between them. (As Joe, Michel Bell sports an impressive basso profundo, but spoils Ol' Man River with a needlessly mannered performance.) Still, it is a relative nonsinger, John McMartin as Cap'n Andy, who is the surprising hit of the show: his desperate reenactment of the interrupted play-within-a-play, The Parson's Bride, is a comic highlight that stays in the mind...

...Mark Sway (Brad Renfro) must get out of dire straits on his own because his father is long gone and his mother is slatternly and foolish. In Angels in the Outfield, an 11-year-old boy named Roger (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is left in a foster home by his feckless father and requires the intervention of a heavenly host to help him. In North, an 11- year-old boy named North (Elijah Wood) becomes so disaffected from his parents that he chooses "free agency" and spends the rest of the picture trying to get other grownups to pick...
