This week Germany stood all but alone. Finland was following Rumania out of the war, more decisively than had feckless Bulgaria (see FOREIGN NEWS). With her went her priceless stores of nickel, manganese and cobalt. Fat, foolish Hungary lay open to the Russians. The "holy soil" of the Reich itself had already been torn by the tracks of U.S. tanks. The haze before the beast's eyes deepened. Soon night would shut...

Italy's forlorn Government shuffled up from Salerno, creaked into a new seat at Rome. Bearded, bitter Premier Ivanoe Bonomi and his fellow ministers held their first meeting in the greystone Palazzo del Viminale. It was an unhappy, feckless af fair. Almost a year after Italy's surrender, little more than a month after the ousting of Marshal Pietro Badoglio, Italy's Government had neither power nor responsibility. ...bases for use when all was ready. In cold, intelligent self-interest, Turkey held out through most of 1943 for assurances that Britain and the U.S. could 1) protect her against Germany during the war; 2) protect her against Russian claims and dominance after the war. Britain's feckless failure to hold three Aegean islands just off Turkey's shores did not help matters this fall...

...started in Queens, where, doctors believe, some feckless fub with a ring-wormy scalp rested his head on the back of a public seat. He thereby infected many other little Queens boys who lolled back in the same seat. They infected more chairs, more little boys. Then some little Queens boys infected chair backs and friends in Manhattan, and ringworm (a fungus infection caused by Microsporon audouini) began its vicious circle. Now there are infected seats in New York City's cinemansions, barber shops, subways and busses...
