...August 1998 Bill Richardson took over Energy from Federico Pena. Soon after, Richardson demanded that the FBI polygraph Lee. He passed, but Richardson suspended his security clearance and moved Lee out of sensitive areas. The Secretary then approved a security crackdown urged by Ed Curran, a former FBI counterespionage specialist hired the previous February to shape up Energy's counterintelligence program. About a month and a half ago, Richardson ordered Energy to polygraph Lee again--and the scientist failed. On Saturday, March 6, the New York Times broke an extensive story on the scandal, and the FBI swept in. They...

...played by Diane Keaton) to see a film. Behind the couple is an obnoxious pseudo-intellectual (who we later find out is a professor at Columbia) mindlessly nattering on and on about every topic imaginable. The professor's knowledge knows no bounds: we are subjected first to criticism of Federico Fellini's oeuvre, then to a savage diatribe against Samuel Beckett. With the awkwardly titled Men With Guns (it amazingly both sounds like, and is, a bad translation), however, Sayles has turned a fundamentally disturbing subject matter fit for a sober documentary into the slow-motion romp of a Mr. Magoo social historian. Main character Dr. Humberto Fuentes (Federico Luppi) undergoes an overblown process of discovery in which we are invited to partake: nasty secret things happening and happen after civil strife. Again, no one can fault Sayles for noble motives, and obviously the story itself merits only the most serious consideration, but Sayles moves much better from family...
