...inaugural. The inaugural itself was simple-with the Governor requesting more power, fussing about the Legislature as he has for two years, and saluting the heroes of The Alamo as he does well and often in song and speech- but the barbecue that came after it was the biggest feed in Texas history. The Governor's guests ate 15 steers, one buffalo, several calves and sheep (in all 17,000 lb. of dressed meat) and 12,800 wieners. They also downed 3,200 loaves of bread, 6,500 buns, 1,250 lb. of onions, half a ton of potato...
Last week Agriculture's farm servicing organization (streamlined by Henry Wallace) swung into action, sought cotton-belt backing for the Perkins plan. It also sought to get farmers to put their freed acreage into the production of food and feed crops, badly needed in the South. In that way the Perkins plan became more than mere peacetime New Dealism, took on a defense coloration. ...comparison with the size of the British holdings, the amount of pool capital discussed last week was chicken feed: $25,000,000 to $75,000,000. Such a sum would have to be revolved several times (as it easily could be) to make a dent on Britain's need. This week, Quinn & friends were back in Wall Street, still discussing. Meanwhile the British were discussing too. Faced with Morgenthau's ultimatum, they were still reluctant to put their properties on this or any other counter...
