...five years, at 200 locations around the U.S., the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been studying mussels, oysters and bottom- dwelling fish, like flounder, that feed on the pollutant-rich sediment. These creatures, like canaries placed in a coal mine to detect toxic gases, serve as reliable indicators of the presence of some 50 contaminants. The news is not good. Coastal areas with dense populations and a long history of industrial discharge show the highest levels of pollution. Among the worst, according to Charles Ehler of NOAA: Boston Harbor, the Hudson River-Raritan estuary on the New Jersey coast...
...This is a most dangerous and wrongheaded precedent," said Rep. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.). He scoffed at claims that dairy producers need the price increase to offset the increased cost of feed resulting from the drought, saying cattle and sheep ranchers and poultry producers are not getting anything similar in the way of a subsidy...
Basic provisions of the bill would provide payments to drought-stricken farmers equal to 65 percent of their lost earnings above 35 percent of anticipated harvest. They also would expand and streamline government feed programs for dairy and livestock producers...
Many of the increases will start with the raw material and pass through to finished products in ways that consumers may not expect. Corn, for example, serves as the basis for everything from cattle feed to margarine, and the crop is severely threatened. If below-average rainfall persists through mid-July, when the plants are pollinated, up to half of the crops could be lost. The sale of stockpiled crops from previous years will mitigate the effects of the drought, but rising corn prices are already putting pressure on cereal makers. General Mills last month boosted the retail prices...
...drought is likely to send meat prices down at first, then higher next year. Many ranchers cannot afford the corn and soybean meal to feed their herds. At the same time, much of the pastureland their cows normally graze has been scorched. As a result, ranchers are slaughtering many more of their cattle than usual. As the meat comes to market, retail prices for beef and pork should decline for the next few months. But by next spring the herds will be reduced, and prices are likely to increase as much as 10% from their current levels. The calf herd...
