...Boston's Crotty Bros, is probably the largest factory feeder anywhere, with almost 500,000 workers in 68 corporations from Maine to Florida and west to Des Moines daily eating out of its hand. This year Crotty expects to gross $15,000,000 (v. $9,500,000 in 1941), though its president Andrew Crotty says that its profits are still figured "in pennies...
...Chicago's up & coming Canteen Food Service, less than three years in the business, is already grossing $2,500,000 a year. Business is terrific for factory feeders, but so are their headaches: high prices, labor problems, food shortages and equipment and maintenance shortages. These make caterers' chief peacetime problems-practical jokers and snitchers-seem almost academic. But at least one big factory feeder still remembers with horror the day when a workman slipped some potassium cyanide he had pinched from the production line into some of its sandwiches. In Kansas City, a staggered work-hour scheme is calculated to give the Kansas City Public Service Co. the equivalent of 42 new busses; Indianapolis Railways (controlling all local transportation) has slashed the number of stops 40% to 2,700, dropped or shortened seven feeder lines to boot. The Cleveland Transit System recently hitched 31-passenger trailers to regular busses. In Washington, transit bigwigs tested a new device: the "standsit" seat. Spaced ten to 14 inches closer than regular seats, they will increase bus and trolley seating capacity...

Some details have leaked out: daily flights on the important New York-Washington beat may be slashed from 52 to 16; on the San Fran-cisco-Los Angeles run from 13 to eight; on many small "feeder" lines to none at all. Air mail also will get clipped; the Army this week was ominously silent when asked about rumors that much air mail will be grounded. The Cost. All this will cost the airlines a pretty penny.
