In 2002 Northern Ireland's power-sharing government collapsed after Donaldson and two other men were arrested and accused of running an I.R.A. spy ring in British government offices in Belfast. The case against them collapsed late last year, but Donaldson subsequently admitted to being a paid British agent for two decades and was expelled from Sinn Fein.
