Michael Huffingtonhas based much of his Senate campaign against Democratic incumbent Dianne Feinstein on combatting illegal immigration, but now he admits employing an illegal alien in his posh Santa Barbara home for five years. Early Wednesday -- right after he reaffirmed his support for the anti-illegal immigration Proposition 187 -- the GOP nominee was asked whether he'd had ever employed an illegal alien, a violation of federal law. His answer: no problem he knew of. But last night, the Huffington camp issued a terse confession -- plus a so-far unsupported accusation that Feinstein had done the same thing. The Huffington...

Incumbent Senator Dianne Feinstein (D., California) appears to be pulling ahead of her G.O.P. challenger in a nasty, no-holds-barred campaign that's the most expensive senate race in history. A San Francisco Examiner poll released this weekend shows Republican challenger Michael Huffington lagging by 6%, wider than a gap of 4 points earlier this month. Still, that's small consolation for Feinstein, who once led by 26 points. Analysts attribute Huffington's strength to a $17 million spending binge, twice Feinstein's expenditures to date...

CALIFORNIA DESERT PROTECTION ACT: This bill would restrict commercial development on 8 million acres of scenic desert while accommodating users ranging from hikers to hunters and motorcyclists. Pushed by Senator Dianne Feinstein, similar bills passed by 2-to-1 votes in both the House and Senate. But now that Republican Representative Michael Huffington is pulling closer in his challenge to Feinstein, G.O.P. lawmakers are using procedural tricks to block the House and Senate measures from being reconciled in conference. "Why give Feinstein a big bill-signing ceremony?" asked an adviser to Dole. "That might be worth a point...

...Huffingtons relieve themselves of the stress of politics with Saturday Night Live-type skits for their friends, in which they mock Feinstein. Says Arianna: "We had her pulling toy levers, saying, 'There crime goes down; there unemployment goes down.' " Then someone mimics a grumpy judge in a courtroom, "Oh, let me see, what kind of race are you? Oh, you're African American. We are not going to sentence you. Our list is already full." The latter refers to Feinstein's hope of finding a way to ensure that convicted blacks aren't sentenced to death in numbers disproportionate...

...grab at the presidency with the same restlessness. So far, Dannemeyer has refused to promise the usual endorsement of the winner. A month ago, Barney Klinger, a wealthy Republican industrialist who has entertained Nixon and Reagan in his house, held a fund raiser that made $100,000 -- for Feinstein. Says Klinger: "Michael fooled us once . . . He has no goal. She does, and she's about 10,000 times smarter than he is, but her goals are to promote her cult, of which she is a high priestess, and become First Lady. I'd like to see him lose...
