...hope I can be forgiven if I take this a little personally. As a (relatively) conservative student active in political organizations here on campus, I resent the implication that I and my fellow student "new" conservatives are racists. Boyd's cartoon offends, and hurts our ability to deal with the very real problems of deteriorating race relations on campus. First, it is just not true. I resent the fact that wild and irresponsbile charges force me into having to "prove" that I and my fellow conservatives are not racist bigots. How is one to defend against such accusations, anyway? Smith's package adds a $338,000 cash bonus and a so-called performance achievement award of $280,000 to his $750,000 salary. The cash bonus and salary figures add up to 8.5% less than Smith...

With the contra military effort in full swing last week, moderate Rebel Leader Alfonso Robelo said he would not seek re-election to the directorate of the United Nicaraguan Opposition, the umbrella group that oversees contra operations. Robelo's move, coupled with last month's resignation of fellow Moderate Arturo Cruz, could greatly strengthen the political role of Adolfo Calero, leader of the main contra military organization, the Nicaraguan Democratic Force. Amid the swirling political crosscurrents, TIME Correspondent Ricardo Chavira visited several contra bases last week in Nicaragua. His report...
