Essential Values. Pasternak dutifully wrote Feltrinelli to get his manuscript back. The publisher, himself an Italian Communist, refused on the grounds that the decision had been forced on Pasternak. In spite of a visit from Alexei Surkov, secretary of the writers' union, Feltrinelli went ahead with plans to publish the book "as a service to the author."
