TIME's report on the foiled plot to overthrow the government in the Philippines noted that the coup was to be announced during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the People Power revolution that toppled Ferdinand Marcos [March 6]. A gift to the world uniquely our own, People Power has been used and abused until its true essence is degraded. To say that Filipino history repeats itself is an understatement. What's happening nowadays to the country clearly indicates that history strikes back with a vengeance. The inability of some Filipinos to learn from the past holds back...

...these bands is not like the others? Trick question: they’re all absolutely identical. While Hard-Fi may be the British buzz band of the moment, they don’t add anything new to an iPod that already contains the Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, and Franz Ferdinand. In fact, as the album progresses, it becomes clear that “Stars of CCTV” is nothing more than a catalogue of pre-fabricated ideas, an uninspired assortment of regurgitated sounds. Each song calls to mind another band that’s already been there and done...

...friend, not China," Saycon assured the man. Saycon then phoned someone he identified as Brigadier General Danilo Lim. Over the speakerphone, Lim said it was "all systems go." A military contingent would march to a shrine in Manila where the 20th anniversary of the People Power revolution (which toppled Ferdinand Marcos) was to be celebrated. There, the military men would meet a group of Catholic bishops, and a Philippine marine officer would read a statement withdrawing support from the government. The bishops made one request: that the coup be bloodless...

When ordinary Filipinos took to the streets in 1986 to overthrow dictator Ferdinand Marcos, they transformed their nation into perhaps the freest in Asia. But last weekend, on the 20th anniversary of the People Power revolution, Filipinos found themselves once again living under the chill of emergency rule. Capping a tense week of coup rumors, Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo proclaimed a state of national emergency on Friday morning, announcing in a taped message on television that she had crushed an attempt by prominent military officers to overthrow her government. Arroyo appealed for calm, even as security forces were...

...music itself makes no great claims to originality. The Arctic Monkeys' lo-fi guitar jags are cribbed from the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand (who cribbed them from Lou Reed and Television and so on), and the band's ska rhythms and martial drums come courtesy of the Clash. But singer-guitarist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, drummer Matt Helders and bassist Andy Nicholson play with a swagger that obliterates any trace of ancestor worship. They aren't referencing anything as they fly through tunes like The View from the Afternoon; they're just playing as many hooks as possible...
