Legend has it that a German newspaper of the 1920s attempted to reach a similar goal by different means when it staged a contest for the most implausible headline that could be imagined. The winner: ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND FOUND ALIVE. WORLD WAR A MISTAKE. A London magazine cited that old joke when it restaged the same contest in the 1950s. The winner: ADENAUER DIES. A moderately funny joke in its time, but also an illustration of how quickly and thoroughly news becomes dated. And not just news itself...
