...Alamos is a majestic ivory mesa artificially painted onto the national landscape by men named Oppenheimer, Fermi, Bohr, Feynman, Kistiakowsky, Szilard and Fuchs. "At great expense, we have gathered on this mesa the largest collection of crackpots ever seen," General Leslie R. Groves told his assembled officers at the remote outpost in the New Mexico wilderness during the darkest days of World War II. "And it's your job to keep them happy...

...threatened with nonpayment if its members dared live up to their reputation for dropping acid. Yet even the performers were aghast at the drugs being passed around by the local students. The usual tales of suburban wife swapping, alcoholism, mental illness, divorce and suicide seem intensified by isolation. Laura Fermi, widow of Physicist Enrico Fermi, once described the genesis of the town's problems: "We were too many of a kind, too close to one another, too unavoidable even during relaxation hours...

...together under a single set of equations all of nature's basic forces. The master of relativity never achieved his grand unification, and many colleagues scorned him for wasting his precious time on such a farfetched intellectual exercise. Last week, at a major meeting of physicists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., outside Chicago, Einstein's seemingly futile dream suddenly sounded far more realistic...

...this was highly exciting news to the nearly 600 physicists from 38 countries gathered at the Fermi accelerator. If gluons really exist, they are the first strong proof of an esoteric yet extremely important new physical theory called quantum chromo dynamics, or QCD. Although more experimental work will be necessary to establish the existence of gluons, already some bold theorists are using QCD in an ambitious attempt to succeed by other means where Einstein failed. That could eventually mean a union of all four of nature's basic forces -gravitation, electromagnetism and the nuclear strong and weak forces. Predicted...

...credit a communications satellite system that will cost about $500 million, and a 50-billion electron-volt accelerator, used in nuclear research. This would cost up to $200 million and would be the largest such installation in China, but only one-eighth the energy of one now operating at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill. Finally, the two countries formally agreed to exchanges of scholars, journalists and cultural groups. To head off any worries in Moscow about the agreements, the Administration emphasized that the U.S. was not providing Peking with anything that the Soviets do not already have...
