...approach originates from a Jesuit priest close to the Vatican-grey, ascetic Father Riccardo Lombardi, who heads a new organization called Per un Mondo Migliore (For a Better World). To the "Better World" school in the Alban Hills near Rome, priests come from all over Latin America to hear fervent weeks of lecturing on the new policies. Moreover, Father Lombardi recently traveled to Mexico, gave a special course to 100 bishops, including Cardinal Luque. gathered from all Latin America. His student-priests can use the church organization as an ear to the ground that no secret police force can match...

Some of Caen's best items come from an army of volunteer tipsters, who range from the Mission Street down-and-outers Caen calls "Skid Rowgues" to the high-and-flighty set he calls the "Nobhillbillies." Despite the fervent pleas of his longtime legman, Jerry Bundsen, 42, Caen refuses to write even one day ahead, pounds out his column in 90 minutes at his air-conditioned office each morning. Though the file box he calls the "item-smasher" is usually filled with rough notes for the column each day, Caen is haunted by the fear that he will...

...cooperates with a Communist leader in a Communist country, a primate who stumped his nation last winter for votes for a straight Communist ticket, a prince of the church who threw away the Vatican rule book in his dealings with the state. He is also the embodiment of the fervent faith of more than 27 million Poles. Wielding that faith as a moral weapon, Wyszynski has forced from Wladyslaw Gomulka's government a degree of religious freedom and recognition for his church undreamed of anywhere else in the Communist world. Today the cardinal and the commissar lean on each...

...plays are far less successful. The evening begins with The Long Voyage Home, a small story of a sailor's being shanghaied. Here, over-acting is at its highest, although Mikel Lambert, in a bit part as a barmaid, is excellent. John Baker plays a bartender with all the fervent cliches of a barber-shop tenor; Cyrus Hamlin, as the poor Swedish hero, is also exaggerated, but with an amiable naviete which suits his role surprisingly well. Jan Baltusnik, as the inevitable whore, adds occasional wistful effectiveness. The director, Edward McKirdy, shows pleasant and exceptional skill...

...last week's Cavalleria, from the moment Tucker's fervent and sensuous voice sounded offstage in Turiddu's precurtain love song, the audience was his. Dressed in a tinhorn gambler's dark shirt and the cheap Sunday suit of a Sicilian villager, Tucker swaggered about the stage in response to broken pleas from Santuzza (well sung by Veteran Zinka Milanov). He powerfully thundered forth his challenge to Alfio, husband of his mistress, and in the final great aria movingly sang his farewell to his mother, the sure delicacy of his voice topped off by his rough...
