...even with all that doom and gloom threatening the future, The Phantom Menace isn't all that menacing. It doesn't let on what's in store for Anakin or even hint at a latent evil within him (although master Yoda is fervent in his assertion that he senses danger in the boy). The story doesn't really center on Anakin but on the Jedi, which is probably a mistake, because neither Qui-Gon nor Obi-Won is an engaging enough character to give the movie the gas it needs to really move...
...communism was just a passing phase. His wife, a fervent Marxist, says ideology has never meant as much to Milosevic as it does to her. When he saw a chance to grab power, he pushed the communists aside and refashioned himself as a nationalist. In 1987 he went to Kosovo, the cradle of Serbian identity, to soothe the grievances of local Serbs, and he made his name by declaring, "No one shall be allowed to beat you." Milosevic was moved less by Serb nationalism than by its power to electrify. "After that night," recounted a Serb journalist, "there...

Their conviction was not based on their own personal actions, but on their association with others who hold the similar views and have committed acts of violence as a result of those views. This type of ruling seems much more congruous with the actions of an Orwellian-type totalitarian state than with the proper proceedings of the American judicial system...
...pornography will not be banned, neo-Nazi hate groups will not be silenced; yet when it comes to pro-life activists, a limit on free speech seems to be uniquely justified. Such a double standard is not only intolerant and undemocratic but also hypocritical. Supporters of choice are ever-fervent in their rally for liberty--just as long as they don't have to apply it to their opposition as well. Melissa R. Moschella '02 is a government and philosophy concentrator in Grays Hall...
