...government, these clashes proved that its hardline policies were justified. "Call it the politics of prudence," says government spokesman Oussama Romdhani. "Why open a Pandora's box by giving fundamentalists a political party? We are sitting peacefully." But even strict secularist laws might not shield Tunisia from growing Muslim fervor in the region. "Before, you never saw a woman veiled in Tunis," says Amel Belhadj Ali, a journalist for the Tunis magazine L'Expression, sitting in her office in jeans and a T shirt. "Now you see more and more." Anti-American sentiment may also be on the rise...

...players' fault. Their fervor in France was the Cup's saving grace. Lined up before matches, imbibing their anthems, most looked ready and able to astonish with honed athleticism. Alas, rugby these days teases but seldom delivers. Its laws prevent even the most gifted players from showing more than a fraction of what they can do. No longer a showcase for sweeping back-line play, creativity or deft passing and handling, the game has become maddeningly disjointed and dull. And except for those fans who are satisfied with endless collisions and messy contests for the ball, everyone knows...

...Reading the names of every victim of the 9/11 tragedy at the anniversary memorial is ridiculous. This country has a nauseating habit of sensationalizing every event with a fervor that borders on fanaticism. We all grieve for the victims of tragedies, but there comes a time when we must be left to our own manner of grieving. Splashing memorial ceremonies throughout the media only dredges up sorrow, which we hardly need at this time in our country's sorry state. If we could bring such passion to the truly important issues, we could forge a better future. Let's move...

...dramatically on top of a sharp rock in the forested Carpathian mountains not far from the picturesque medieval Romanian town of Brasov, Bran Castle looks straight out of a fairy tale. But its beauty alone does not explain the fervor of the debate over its ownership. The myth-shrouded castle is also known as Dracula's Castle: according to legend, Vlad "The Impaler" Draculae, a local ruler known for his cruel torture methods (the story goes he liked to have his dinner while watching his opponents painfully die on a stake) used to inhabit Bran Castle. This, however, is merely...

Credit Colin Firth and his toned torso emerging from a fountain in the BBC adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” for ushering in an era of Jane Austen fervor. Nearly 10 years after most women with a pulse realized Mark Darcy is the most eligible bachelor in fictional history comes “The Jane Austen Book Club,” a film adaptation of the popular novel by Karen Joy Fowler. The premise of “Book Club” is refreshingly intelligent. It is a step above standard romantic dramedy fare that...
