"Not taking a vacation would not be French," explains Diane Hebert-Stevens, a young Parisian ad saleswoman. While Europeans are vacationing with undiminished fervor, the trips they're taking now come in several different flavors. A classic is still S&M - sand and masochism - those wonderful weeks of getting burnt, stung by jellyfish (and the local doctor who treats you), losing your watch while making sandcastles with the kids, eating a prawn that...

Caught flat-footed by the scope of the protests and the discontent in Hong Kong, Beijing has blacked out on the mainland all news in local Chinese-language media of the historic demonstrations as it works out a strategy to deal with the territory's new fervor for democracy. And although civil and political discourse has been coarsened in recent years, there is still a tradition of Rotary Clubs and high-minded councils dedicated to discussing the common good without resorting to partisan fervor. Franklin decreed that Junto members should put forth their ideas through suggestions and questions, using (or at least feigning) naive curiosity to avoid contradicting people in a manner that could give offense. "All expressions of positiveness in opinion or of direct contradiction were," he recalled, "prohibited under small pecuniary penalties...

...century has the idea of evangelizing Islam awakened such fervor in conservative Christians. Touched by Muslims' material and (supposed) spiritual needs, convinced that they are one of the great "unreached megapeoples" who must hear the Gospel before Christ's eventual return, Evangelicals have been rushing to what has become the latest hot missions field. Figures from the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, suggest that the number of missionaries to Islamic countries nearly doubled between 1982 and 2001--from more than 15,000 to somewhere in excess...
