...Victory: Songs of Faith and Redemption," I discovered a batch of female folk artists who, even in their sometimes cliched anguish over lost love, came out as women who knew the value and pain of an honest day's labor. All too ready to dismiss this as another whine-fest on my way in, I instead was caught up with the crowd in wildly applauding the willowy Dee Carstensen strumming her harp siren-style and wailing in a thin voice reminiscent of Sixpence None the Richer. But these women were no naifs. Cheryl Wheeler's crystal clear voice whispered...

...Minus Man hoping to find the "next big thing." Forget that. The movie was an unqualified disaster (see page 6). To clear the memory, I went to see The Sixth Sense again--surprise, surprise, it was sold out--so I settled for tickets to the Kevin Bacon scream-fest Stir of Echoes. "We are not here to place blame, but to shoulder responsibility," he said in a brief statement before the gab-fest was closed to the media. He's got a better idea, a way to get to the head of the class on Littleton without upsetting anyone who can make him regret it. He's declaring youth violence a disease...

That package includes some good laughs and legitimately chilling moments. Though both a comedy and a horror film, Idle Hands is not so much a derivative send-up a la Scream as it is an all-out joke-fest, mocking itself as much as the genre. Of course, Idle Hands is no masterpiece. The plot borders on thin, the ending is a bit awkward, and some of the jokes feel stale. And, in case you haven't gotten the picture by now, DO NOT bring your grandmother to see this one. Easily offended moviegoers should definitely steer clear...
