In essence he is only a loner and sometime petty robber preying on squalid little settlements in the region, who takes karlas an apprentice of sorts. The sincere bumbling Karl himself becomes entrenched in the Barbarosa legend, as the "baby gringo," a Sancho Panza to Barbarosa's Quixote...
This entertaining tale is embedded in a rather stylized theatrical framework. The Leading Player (Rich Dikeman), somewhere between Brecht/Weill's Streetsinger and Family Feud's Richard Dawson in character, acts as both cynical observer and cheerful encourager, alternately telling the story and creating it. Accompanied by an amorphously mobile chorus, the Players, he is constantly on hand to remind the audience--and the other characters--that it's all just magic and illusion...
...isolated incident. But maybe it wasn't. Maybe all of us who were raised on TV and professional sports are going to see elections as we see sporting events or--more to the point--game shows. Maybe by '88 or '92 we'll be watching "Senatorial Jackpot" or "Congressional Feud." Maybe if we can win a few bucks, the apathetic generations of the '70s and '80s will pay a little attention to who is making the decisions about life and death and war and taxes in this country...
