...told in a style that might most charitably be called ungrammatical. Rock and roll writing should match the energy that defines that medium; Sanchez's prose sags and limps like a fat whore caught in a rumble. Perhaps Sanchez learned English as a second language. Certain words, like "fey" and "gossamer," become all-purpose modifiers, salt for his nouns--evervone in this book is at one time or another, "gossamer." But Sanchez's style doesn't come to full efflorescence till he describes the Stones' (or his own) women. Consider his paean to the physiognomy of Marianne Faithfull...
...heroine is defined more by brand names (Gucci, Mercedes, Perrier) than emotions or intellect. There are only silly plot devices to motivate her on-again, off-again affair with the street-kid hero, Strip. Tom lin has so little to work with that she falls back on fey comic mannerisms and, finally, phony swoons and sighs. It is the first time that this usually empathetic actress has stood completely outside the character she is playing. Instead of creating a latter-day version of Anne Bancroft's Mrs. Robinson, she comes across like a somnambulant Elaine...
...must confess that Northern Ireland was one of those places I never read about until I met a fey, green-eyed lady from Belfast atacocktail party in New York City. We spoke only briefly amidst a throng of minglers and I asked why she had come to the United States. In reply, she dug around in her purse, and proudly produced a small box. Mystified, I held out my hand and she placed a heavy gold medal in it. Upon closer inspection I realized I was holding a Nobel Peace Prize, and the the lady I was speaking with...
...fey region illustrated and described by Brian Froud and Alan Lee owes more to sensuality than to the sentimentality that usually surrounds the subject. As the foreword suggests: "Faeries are themselves creatures of the raw stuff of life and are ceaselessly attracted to all forms of creativity and particularly to moments of high emotion in which they seek to be participants. Lovers, poets, artists, writers, sculptors, weavers, musicians and the like-all the arts, indeed, acknowledge a debt to an unidentifiable, invisible, capricious, sensitive, delicate, elusive and powerful force which is called 'inspiration,' or 'Muse...
...charming Rue McClanahan, late of Lear's Maude, stars as a fey woman who, in the Depression, hires an entire family out of the want ads. Why? Never mind. Suffice it to say that there are a lot of F.D.R. and Anna May Wong jokes. Among the unruly supporting players, Dabney Coleman is refreshingly laid back as the heroine's hired fella, but the gifted Jack Gilford is squandered as a crochety blind grandpa. Someone should put Apple Pie back in the oven. - Frank Rich
