...what's the plan? World domination? Keep throwing money at everything and see what works? Google isn't making friends along the way, taking on the likes of Microsoft (desktop software), eBay (classified advertising), phone companies (the San Francisco wi-fi plan) and others. Google keeps a confidential list of the 100--yes, 100--top priorities under development. That's a long list, and investors would love to know more about it and what Page, Brin and Schmidt are thinking. But secrecy is part of the culture. Google doesn't even invite analysts in for earnings-guidance sessions...

...came up with a formula to help ensure this. Every employee is meant to divide his or her time in three parts: 70% devoted to Google's core businesses, search and advertising; 20% on pursuits related to the core; and 10% on far-out ideas. The San Francisco wi-fi initiative resulted from someone's 10% time; so did Google Talk, a free system for instant and voice messaging. If Google ever builds that space elevator, it will no doubt be during 10% time...

Following a strange path, The Fountain began as an epic Brad Pitt vehicle written and directed by Aronofsky, whose indie movie ? combined sci-fi, mysticism and math to much critical acclaim. Reportedly budgeted at $75 million in 2002, The Fountain was well into pre-production when Pitt dropped out, closing the project. Continuing an emerging trend of turning failed film projects into comix (see Birth of a Nation), The Fountain represents a visualization of that lost picture. However, simultaneously with working on the book, Aronofsky developed a scaled-down movie version, starring Hugh Jackman, which is now in post-production...

Another part is indelibly indie: he will shoot an ad-lib HBO series about lobbyists (K Street), or remake a mystical Russian sci-fi art film (Solaris). Not everything works, but it's more than cool that he tries...
