Recycling companies like North Shore Recycled Fiber Corporation (NSRFC) now charge up to $30 to recycle a ton of paper--a service that used to be free. NSRFC stopped offering free collections six months ago when the number of newspapers exceeded its processing capacity, said sales manager Robert Heffernan...
Psyllium is not exactly a household staple, but the obscure grain has provoked a kitchen-table brawl between General Mills and Procter & Gamble. Psyllium contains soluble fiber, which has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels. The grain is an ingredient in Benefit, a new breakfast cereal General Mills introduced in May. Psyllium is also found in Metamucil, one of P&G's fiber laxatives. Call it a natural disaster. The San Diego Zoo spent $3.5 million to build a designer forest that would house five adolescent Malayan sun bears. The zookeepers planted some trees, dug a moat, launched a waterfall, even hooked up a fiber-glass tree with an electric honey dispenser. He argues that she threatens our freedoms with "connubial insider trading" because her husband is a Senator. Apparently her marital status should deprive her of speaking privileges in public -- an argument Westbrook Pegler used to make against Eleanor Roosevelt. Penthouse says Rakolta is taking us down the path toward fascism. It attacks her for living in a rich suburb -- the old "radical chic" argument...
...Ames Research Center, visitors who put on special computerized gloves and helmets can actually experience what it would be like to explore various 3-D worlds -- a space station orbiting the earth, for example, or the landscape of Mars. The gloves are equipped with magnetic position trackers and fiber-optic sensors that telegraph every movement of the hand directly to the machine. The helmet is equipped with a pair of stereoscopic TV projectors, one for each eye, that are carefully coordinated so that a slight turn of the head to the right will shift the entire synthetic world...
