...flavors to impinge on their wrathful pounding, so System of a Down, an Armenian-American metal band, is as refreshing as a whiff of shish kebab in a Burger King. Its music has a near Eastern feel, a sound akin to what Metallica might produce in a revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Moreover, the band knows raunchy from bad: drug dealers and groupies get their due tongue lashings. Best of all, the group keeps most songs under three minutes, a suitable dose of new metal for ears still traumatized by old metal's five-minute guitar solos...

DIED. JOHN HARTFORD, 63, quirky, sociable bluegrass banjo virtuoso, fiddler and guitarist, who penned the much recorded country song Gentle on My Mind, which won him two Grammy Awards and became a Top 40 hit for Glen Campbell; of cancer; in Nashville, Tenn. Beloved for spirited performances at bluegrass festivals and for throwing picking parties at his home, Hartford collaborated with the Byrds and Benny Martin but also recorded some 40 of his own albums, most recently appearing on the sound track for the film O Brother, Where Art Thou...

...beloved movie to the stage ever. Most of Brooks' famous lines and bits are here, including the memorable Springtime for Hitler production number, staged by Stroman with goose-stepping pizazz. The new songs--Brooks wrote the music and the lyrics--are a sprightly retro pastiche, ranging from mock Fiddler on the Roof, to mock Astaire and Rogers, to mock Bavarian beer hall. There's a chorus line of old ladies with walkers, a flock of pigeons doing the Nazi salute and more gay jokes than have crossed a stage since Liberace. The show delivers such a wealth of vaudeville exuberance...

...time greatest movie we ever went to on Christmas was a revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Even though, technically, Jesus' birthday is the date in history that divides Christians and Jews, spending Jesus' birthday with Tevye and clan was our holiest holiday-film choice. Granted it is a little disconcerting on Christmas to watch a Russian official refer to the Jews as "Christ killers," or a gang of creepy gentiles boot Tevye and his fellow villagers from the only home they've ever known. Motel the Tailor complains, "We've been waiting for the Messiah all our lives. Wouldn...

...Fiddler on the Roof is the perfect picture to see for a family with only teenage daughters. Tevye, who has no sons, sarcastically calls his five girls "five blessings." The film tracks the accelerating rebellion of the three eldest, all of whom choose to marry for love, thwarting the efforts of the cranky old matchmaker. It is my dream that someone will someday make a sequel. At the end of Fiddler, Tevye and his wife are about to take their two youngest girls to New York City. If the first three were such headaches in the Russian village...
