...beloved movie to the stage ever. Most of Brooks' famous lines and bits are here, including the memorable Springtime for Hitler production number, staged by Stroman with goose-stepping pizazz. The new songs--Brooks wrote the music and the lyrics--are a sprightly retro pastiche, ranging from mock Fiddler on the Roof, to mock Astaire and Rogers, to mock Bavarian beer hall. There's a chorus line of old ladies with walkers, a flock of pigeons doing the Nazi salute and more gay jokes than have crossed a stage since Liberace. ...time greatest movie we ever went to on Christmas was a revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Even though, technically, Jesus' birthday is the date in history that divides Christians and Jews, spending Jesus' birthday with Tevye and clan was our holiest holiday-film choice. Granted it is a little disconcerting on Christmas to watch a Russian official refer to the Jews as "Christ killers," or a gang of creepy gentiles boot Tevye and his fellow villagers from the only home they've ever known. It is my dream that someone will someday make a sequel. At the end of Fiddler, Tevye and his wife are about to take their two youngest girls to New York City. If the first three were such headaches in the Russian village...
Though its premise is original, the abundance of stereotypes means that Just Looking can't be a truly significant film. You can't help notice each new cliche, from the pin-up of Hedy as a lingerie model to the kosher butcher Mark, a throw-back to Fiddler on the Roof's Lazar Wolf...
...fiddler, Jostrom had not taken the typical course to learning his instrument. He would pick up most music by ear, listening to both records and fiddle players...
