...restless, lifelong dream to steer her by: he wanted to sail around the world by himself. Driven by his dream, Boston had built his ship, a 30-ft. auxiliary ketch, with his own hands on the lawn of his home in Swampscott, Mass. Two years ago, he coaxed the Fiddler's Green as far as Port Said before an attack of jaundice sent him home by freighter, his ship lashed ignobly on deck...
This remarkable performance must be charged, more or less, to British Cartoonist Gerard Hoffnung, who for years has been satirizing the music business. In his cartoons, tubby Artist Hoffnung has created a wonderfully zany world-the bass fiddler peers from behind his instrument through a periscope; an old huge-wheeled bicycle becomes a harp; the phrenetic maestro sharpens his baton with a pencil sharpener. Purpose of the Hoffnung concert (recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall with a full symphony orchestra and some of Britain's leading musicians) was to translate the cartoons into sound. ...scene is the ruins of Athens, among which a few gods and goddesses still philander alongside the tourists. Orpheus, a hearts-and-flowers fiddler, plots with Pluto to get rid of his wife Eurydice, although she is really very fetching in her tight red pedal pushers. At the end, the crowd let loose an eight-minute tumult, only stopped temporarily when the orchestra went into a rare encore-Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice. Said a leading Russian fiddler: "It's the greatest orchestra in the world...
...footling experiments blew up and cost Lovey her sight. Red-haired Lovey soon finds that she is a misfit as a martyr. "Being a mean child," she explains, "I hadn't the temperament for it." While mother works as a nurse and father, as Noonday Ned the Oldtime Fiddler, saws away at the local radio station, Lovey is left to the untender mercies of sour old grandma, who tries zealously to clothe the girl in blue cheesecloth and Christian resignation. But Lovey wields her cross like a blunt instrument, tears up her Braille primer, tongue-lashes sympathetic playmates, flatly...
