Since 1963, Cuban vets--who worked at the Navy's Guantanamo Bay base and in many cases saw combat--have been denied the pension benefits owed them under U.S. law. Washington has long maintained that the money would line Fidel Castro's pockets. But now at least 250 plaintiffs hope to have a class action accepted in federal court to obtain their money. Village by village, Mexico is hollowing out. Fidel Guevara, 39, left his farming hamlet of Manlio Fabio Altamirano, 25 miles west of Veracruz city, five years ago and worked on a farm in New Era, Ore. He moved back last year only because he missed his wife and daughters. His son Hector, 18, is still in Oregon, making $7 an hour at a plant nursery. Guevara's return hasn't been perfect. DIED. TAD SZULC, 74, foreign correspondent extraordinaire for the New York Times; of cancer; in Washington. Szulc broke the story of the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba and later wrote a biography of Fidel Castro. Born in Poland, Szulc came to the U.S. in 1947. He spoke six languages and reported from Asia, Latin America and Europe...
