...would ring in the new millennium. Plumping up to 1,070 pounds, the massive new ball touted handcrafted Waterford crystal triangles, each with a design symbolizing various messages such as "Hope for Fellowship," "Hope for Wisdom" and "Hope for Abundance." With minor tweaks, that sphere remained through the 2007 fiesta...
...Indeed, Catalonia has long led the movement to do away with what is still referred to in Spain as the "national fiesta." In 2003, the region passed a sweeping animal-protection law that, among its many measures, restricted towns without bullrings from building them and prohibited all children under age 14 from attending a corrida by placing the equivalent of an R movie rating on the event. The following year, Barcelona's municipal government declared the Catalan capital an "anti-bullfighting city" in a nonbinding resolution; 70 other Catalan towns and cities have since followed suit. Whether more people are partying at home to save some dough, or flocking to Dollar Tree from other stores for cheap supplies, Dollar Tree, based in Chesapeake, Va., loves the fiesta. The chain, which operates about 3,700 stores in 48 states, saw its profits rise 51%, to $56.9 million, for the quarter that ended Aug. 1. In a depressed retail environment, same-store sales jumped 6.8% for the quarter; the retailer's shares have risen over 40% since mid-February. "For us, the world is our oyster," Gary Philbin, Dollar Tree's COO, said at a recent analyst presentation...
...Ford clearly wants to improve its standing. On Sept. 23, CEO Alan Mulally was in New Delhi to unveil a new four-door hatchback called the Figo that is aimed squarely at India and neighboring South Asian countries. Designed by Indian engineers on the Fiesta platform, the new small car "is going to be a game changer," predicts Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India. When it debuts next year, the Figo (the name means "cool" in Italian) will be made in India and powered by either a 1.2-liter gas or 1.5-liter diesel engine. Ford also...
...Jagdish Khattar, former managing director of Suzuki India who now runs Carnation Auto, an independent multibrand auto sales start-up, attributes Ford's poor showing to a lack of the right mass-market product. Its India models - the Fiesta, Ikon and Fusion - are relatively large and expensive (for India). Small cars - those powered by engines of 1.5 liters or less and generally costing no more than $8,000 - drive 70% of auto sales in the country. "Ford was operating in just 30% of the market," says Khattar. "All the action was happening elsewhere." The diminutive Figo is Ford...
