Although he finds the South Seas entertaining, Manhattan proved his most disquieting experience since the War. After seeing his Simon Called Peter as a play, he had little comment; but when he saw the film version of Recompense, he said that he saw no reason why he should not write a new novel based on the film. What Price Glory impressed him very much, although he found the slang difficult to understand, particularly that used by the Marines. The liberality of the Manhattan theatre he found impressive for he, perhaps naturally, has no sympathy with censorship. Ah well, no more...

Characteristically, his performance was intelligent and distinctive. He gave the Emperor a judicious mixture of viciousness and humor. Otherwise, the film was inconspicuous. There were a great many actors and a good deal of scenery, but the swift smoothness of Hollywood was lacking...

He can be viewed by the restless seekers after stimulation. In short, he is in the cinema. The film (from Conan Doyle's tale) is unimportant in narrative. An English youth would like to marry. His girl tells him he must do big things. Eventually, they migrate to South America on the trail of prehistorics. Out come the brontosauri and Bull Montana as an ape man; the fun starts. Later...
...immorality. The point is made by displaying a man and a woman in residence without benefit of clergy. The man finally pulls a gun on himself. Side by side with this fable is, of course, the happily married pair, living thus ever after. As a cheap melodrama, the film is not bad; as a criticism of the current social system, it is grotesque...
Capital Punishment. We are led to believe that this effort is something of a propaganda film. Death for crime is depicted, in a sense, as a crime in itself. The familiar old device of showing a prisoner convicted by circumstantial evidence is employed. He didn't do it. You know he didn't; everybody knows it; but it takes the film several reels of rather weary melodrama to convince its own authorities...
