Ophuls maintains a balance between scheme and characters by acknowledging and mocking the scheme. The meneur d? jen (Anton Walbrook), who opens the film by addressing the audience, keeps returning to change seenes between the ten episodes which compose the film. His appearances as functionaries-headwaiters, coachmen-are at once pleasantly obvious and sparked by unexpected twists which it would be criminal to reveal. Ophuls similarly keeps a sustained irony from overweighting the episodes, by employing a formal inventiveness remarkably responsive to the nuances of each situation. The subtle differences of class, age, and character of each person affords Ophuls...
Research groups composed of educators, psychologists, advertising people, film makers and children's authors met at five three-day seminars in the summer of 1968. Simultaneously Dr. Edward L. Palmer, an associate research professor in Oregon's state system of higher learning, began working with children across the country. "We learned that what bores them is too much time spent on any one subject." Hence the short spots. Also, "Nothing loses them faster than an adult full-face on the screen just talking." ...wins a crack at an Olympic championship. Along the way he wrangles with his coach (Gene Hackman), makes the usual number of enemies, and sleeps with a couple of girls, one disadvantaged and one super-sleek (Camilla Sparv). A routine routine, but Director Michael Ritchie freshens up his first film with some electrifying camera work. The exhilarating danger of downhill racing is perfectly portrayed with footage shot by Pro Skier Joe Jay Jalbert, who held a camera in his hands instead of poles. Gene Hackman has just the right combination of brio and go-go-go as the coach...
Marlowe still packs a heater in a shoulder holster, and still operates out of an office that could qualify for urban renewal. But for this film, Director Paul Bogart (no kin) is just keeping down appearances. Whenever the plot calls for straight shooting, he is as crooked as a cop on the take, using sleazy trick photography and mannered techniques. In a scene of two people in a large living room, for example, Bogart can be counted on to plant the viewer in the fireplace, behind the flames...
Brian Dowline, Yale's fabled quarterback is the best athlete Hurley has played against "His ability to scramble enable him to avoid eating the ball, and eased harsh in our secondary. He wasn't all that impressive on film, but when you had to go out and play against him, it was a whole different story." he said...
