More than any other Cirque show, O incorporates these acts into its expansive design. A quartet of carousel horses canters through the air. Angels, hunchbacks, giant toucans materialize as cameo apparitions. Anything may navigate the pool: a bathtub, a giant inverted umbrella, a wayward iceberg, a shark fin that turns out to be the top of a crescent moon. At the end the hunchback plays a grand piano as the princess reclines on it--art, love and beauty in one heartbreaking image--and then, slowly, it dissolves into the water. Here and throughout, O achieves a goal of the highest...

...film poster on one couple's wall is for Le Mepris. In English that's contempt--the operative tone in this spiky new farce from the perp of In the Company of Men. A La Ronde for our own fin de siecle, the film offers six yuppies having lots of sex. But no one has much fun. Sex, as one of the women (Catherine Keener, who kills with sarcasm) says, "is not a time for sharing." Jason Patric is the chief sleaze; Ben Stiller adds to his gallery of wormy guys; and Aaron Eckhart is the doleful husband who, when...

Motorcycle technology advanced so quickly under the spell of the fin-de-siecle obsession with heroic speed that only 13 years later, in 1907, the future aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss was able to put an eight-cylinder engine in a truss frame of metal tubes and go rocketing through a measured mile in Florida at 136 m.p.h...

GAME SHOW NETWORK If this fin-de-siecle thing means anything, the game show will soon return in all its glory. And while we're rutted in the suburbanized '90s version of the genre--Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!--this station reminds us of all that game shows can be. The original programming can be stunningly bad (in particular, avoid the "comedy" show Faux Pause), but the repeats are groovy. The best stuff, of course, comes from Chuck Barris. The Gong Show is topped only by the short-lived Three's a Crowd, "the game that determines who knows...

...Belgian Symbolism: Gustave Moreau, Puvis de Chavannes, Fernand Khnopff. Burne-Jones' morbid hypersensitivity was what made him a genuinely advanced figure in Symbolist eyes, and it is the trait that is bringing him back into popularity today, now that "heroic," confrontational Modernism is losing its mandate in our fin de siecle...
