...happy coincidence with its title, the picture is solid throughout, and even the smaller roles show depth and good characterization. Denholm Elliott, as Wilson the clerk, Peter Finch, as Father Rank, and Gerard Oury as Yusef all contribute positively in small ways. Yusef's dialogues with Scobie provide some of the scarce light spots of the evening, but because of their disturbing implications never contradict the overall tone of the film...

To play this sort of thing in any but the Edwardian dress and spirit is as an acronistic as expecting Sherlock Holmes to track Dr. Moriarity with radar and an all-point bulletin. Still, Guinness and Peter Finch, as Flambeau, do their best to ignore the modern trappings of police and society, and to behave like brilliant amateurs, who are good and evil (respectively) for the joy of it, not because they are sociological case histories...

Widows, as somebody in the picture remarks, are irresistible because "if you are better than the first [husband], they are grateful, and if you are worse, they are not surprised...

Thus Finch's announcement a year later means that the Faculty has been considering the program over a year and that its study is well-advanced. It is believed by Princeton observers that Finch would have refused all comment were the school about to discard consideration of an Advanced Standing Program...
