Predictably, the renewed attention to girls has sparked a backlash. Parents are demanding that their sons be included in Take Our Daughters to Work Day. A surge of new books, such as Michael Gurian's A Fine Young Man and William Pollack's Real Boys, focuses on boys' emotional crises and academic problems in reading and writing.
