Delivery-Boys. For this victory Franklin Roosevelt could thank many a man, but particularly two-Jimmy Byrnes of South Carolina in the Senate, Lindsay Carter Warren of North Carolina in the House. Powerful Mr. Warren, a bull-built, blunt, 49-year-old country lawyer with a fine stand of black hair, may one day be Speaker of the House, notwithstanding the hankering of the White House Janizariat for John W. McCormack, of Boston's famous Ward 8. Last week Lindsay Warren, working glove-smooth with Leader Sam Rayburn of Texas, Whip Paddy Boland of Scranton, Pa., delivered the South...
...network of Washington intrigues meant little to one suffering group of U. S. citizens. All the shipping lines could see were the angular lines of the combat areas defined by the President, wherein no U. S. ship may deliver goods of any sort on penalty of $50,000 fine, five years in prison or both (see map). Through these forbidden seas lay the eight trade routes of 92 U. S. ships, with a Government investment of $195,061,000, an annual gross revenue of $52,500,000. There was plenty of open water elsewhere-notably around South America-but hardly...
...intriguing mixture of dadaistic dances and Jerome Kern melodies form the gossamer-like substance of "Very Warm For May," the new Kern-Hammerstein musical which began its Boston run last night. The result is most pleasing, for just as the incongruity of surrealistic ballet and fine music strike a humorous note, so does this musical comedy give the impression that it is laughing at itself and having a delightful time all the while. A fresh and often amusing plot jogs in and out and around a score of singing and dancing sequences formidably staged by Vincente Minnelli, reaching a high...
Sinkiang Province (area: 705,769 sq. mi.; population: 4,360,000), sometimes called Chinese Turkestan, is a fairly rich, comparatively unexploited, thoroughly exotic area. Its principal exports have been wool, camel's-hair, sheep guts, gold, jade, fine horses, Chinese medicinal ingredients (elk horn, saiga antelope horn, bears' paws). The huge province has never been properly integrated with China, and since about 1930, Russian influence has almost amounted to domination. Since economically Sinkiang is already virtually a Russian province, Generalissimo Chiang Kaishek, no lover of Communists, may well have seen the sense of making concessions there...
Nazi Propagandist Paul Joseph Goebbels hung on the chests of ten German newspapermen ten Iron Crosses for the fine work they had done for the Fatherland in their war dispatches...
