...Krauthammer missed the point. It is whether Bush, because of his privileged background, was given a soft posting while others were sent to Vietnam and whether he failed to serve his country fully. It is fine for a President to talk about patriotism and land on aircraft-carrier decks, but it is not so good for that same President to appear to have had a different standard when it was his turn to serve his country. Nonetheless there were a number of worthy elements in the show. Dick showed perhaps the best instincts in the cast: when she started talking and stopped talking, it felt natural and unforced, not something merely demanded by the script. Hillhouse had many fine moments, exhibiting a crisp, clear voice and a talent for knowing how to throw away a line to get a laugh. Shalhoub handled Beth’s vocal and physical handicaps expertly throughout the show, and Bass offered the right note of impassioned incredulity as Beth’s unwilling love interest...

On the other hand, I don’t think that remakes are necessarily bad, especially with the right cachet; I was fine with paying top dollar to see the Psycho remake, for example, because I couldn’t pass up the chance to see William H. Macy and Julianne Moore slotted into a Hitchcock movie. I would also enjoy a shot-by-shot North by Northwest remake starring Jeff Bridges...
