"Personally," he told reporters, "I think a female Emperor is fine." More than fine, we'd say. Fine-acious! In fact, we think some other statutes should be passed to bring the world's royals into a more modern world...
From there, the network announced Judd Apatow's college comedy "Undeclared" and Barry Sonnenfeld's superhero spoof "The Tick." Fine comedies both. And I can say that with conviction because I've seen them already - "The Tick" was sent to critics last summer and "Undeclared" this winter, both with plans to run midseason. Taking your time to debut shows is fine, of course - it just tends, again, to undercut those claims about your vaunted sitcom development...
...best of these stories all involve a woman's quiet moments alone or with others, revealing complex emotions with subtly and efficiency. Twice I found myself feeling like I had experienced another person's life. Twice! The black and white art, all done with super-fine pen lines, has plenty of nice detail. Masilamani does faces especially well, giving them an expressiveness and range that can't be reached with simplified characters...
...show isn't quite as good on icons of craft as one might wish. Its conspectus of ceramics is quite good, but it's weaker in furniture. There is a fine suite of low-slung Modernist furniture in gumwood designed by Rudolph Schindler in the 1930s for his unbuilt Shep House in Los Angeles, and a splendid 1908 sideboard with inlays of fruitwood, ebony and abalone shell by Greene & Greene, those Pasadena masters of the Arts and Crafts style. But it's hard to get much more than a hint of how much really good furniture was being made...
