...Wahid - for advice. The pair hail from Herat, the center of Afghanistan's carpet business, but moved to the Pakistani capital Islamabad 20 years ago, after fleeing the Afghan-Soviet war. There, Wahid set up the family shop, Herat Carpets, and today father and son stock some of the finest Afghan rugs available. Authentic antique Afghan carpets are increasingly hard to find, says Wahid, and cost many thousands of dollars. A decent alternative is a high-quality 30- to 40-year-old carpet that, though affordable, is also likely to increase in value (and beauty) with age. But there...
...this week. How did Tesco do it? Under the leadership of former chairman Ian MacLaurin and current chief executive Terry Leahy, Tesco cleaned up its dingy stores, expanded into more convenient central locations, and offered a more inspiring product line without sacrificing rock-bottom prices. It developed its premium Finest and economy Value private-label ranges and moved into higher-margin nonfood items such as electronics, housewares and clothing (with styles that actually make the fashion pages of mass-market women's magazines). In TIME, I wrote about Chess when it was still an album, a year before it was staged in London and three years before a revised version...
...Well, no. The show, budgeted at an outsize $14 million, received weak reviews ("A monochromatic musical in the key of beige." -Ben Brantley, New York Times). Rahman didn't get a Tony award, or even a nomination, for his music - the finest, broadest score in ages wasn't deemed one of the best four on Broadway last season! (Out of a total of about seven.) The Indo-American audience wasn't large enough to keep it afloat, and it didn't attract the idle non-Desi curious. Inserting American Idol notoriety Tamyra Gray did little to pump up the gross...
