Some of my experiences last year were almost as bad. When I was told that my mark in German was forty-nine, I looked somewhat aghast, for I had written a first-rate paper. The instructor, noticing my horror, kindly offered to explain, and took me with him to the tutorial mansion. I was astonished to see the library-table covered with mathematical instruments, for he did not teach mathematics; the explanation soon came. He first showed me six trifling errors in my book; then he drew a circle with a radius of six inches, inscribed an equilateral triangle...
...commotion at the top of the hill draws my attention that way; a huge, unwieldy double-runner is prepared, and various men skilled in Latin and Greek seat themselves upon it. At first they go swimmingly, the weight of the dead languages carrying them bravely down the hill, but unfortunately they are taking the course at sight; a hidden root - they know not whence it came - stumps them, and they are spilled out promiscuously...

The races are to be rowed either at Newark or Saratoga, during the first week of July, and on the day preceding the regular annual regatta of the association, which regatta the college crews are also invited to enter, in case they wish to test their prowess against that of non-collegiate amateurs.
