More modest aspirations attend the indie drama A Single Man, about a teacher grieving for his dead lover. Director Tom Ford and the Weinstein Company would be pleased with respectable grosses and an Oscar for its leading man, Colin Firth, who was named best actor at this year's Venice Film Festival. The $216,000 A Single Man earned at nine venues is a good start toward the first goal; but, at least in the early critics votes, Firth keeps getting edged out for Best Actor by another sensitive hunk: George Clooney...

...worthiest Venice entry was A Single Man. The first film directed by renowned fashion designer Tom Ford, it provides Firth, best known as the dreamboat Mr. Darcy in the BBC's 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice, with the role of a lifetime. No less than Lebanon, this is a film of man in extremis, seen in extreme close-up. Firth's professor, disconsolate over the death of his longtime beau in a car crash, meticulously rehearses his own suicide, by gunshot, but can't find a practical or aesthetically elegant way to carry it off. The Southern California setting...

...there's nothing more fearsome than the liberal establishment in uproar. After protests from prominent fans of the Observer such as writer Martin Amis, actors Simon Callow and Colin Firth, kitchen goddess Nigella Lawson and musicians Damon Albarn and Dizzee Rascal, GMG issued a statement confirming that the Observer would survive. But the statement also spoke of a "greater degree of integration between the editorial teams of the Guardian and Observer." A "new look" Observer, expected to be leaner, is in development. Ford, the Austin, Texas, fashion designer who for a decade was the creative director at Gucci, financed his first feature himself. The director turned out to be a good investment for the producer. Nuance, not flash, is his forte. Playing to Firth's subtleties, he photographs the actor's handsome, mourning face in caressing close-up. (In his professor glasses, Firth looks like a young, more studious Michael Caine.) Ford is also attentive to the varieties of Southern California sunlight, which lends A Single Man an orangey warmth that should touch all who see the picture. But it's Firth...
