...character than the McMurdo Dry Valleys, a wedge of rugged, rocky terrain stippled with ice-covered lakes and overhung by glaciers. No diminutive alpine plants cling to the slopes of these valleys. No rodents scurry amid the boulders and scree. No flies or mosquitoes whir through the air; no fish, mollusks or crustaceans dwell in the lakes and streams...

Biologist Ransom Myers of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia led a team of researchers in examining the logbooks of U.S. fishing boats operating in the northwestern Atlantic from 1986 to 2000. The fleets were hunting swordfish and tuna using what are known as longlines, cables stretching as long as 20 miles that are equipped with more than 500 baited hooks. Toss a line overboard, and up should come your desired prey--plus a lot of other hungry fish that you didn't mean to snag. "Longlines are designed to collect large marine predators," says biologist Julia Baum, lead author...

...Dalhousie team believes that there is still time to save the sharks before the most imperiled species are entirely wiped out, but conservationists must act fast. The best protection method is to establish marine reserves--areas of ocean where fishing is off limits for a while so the vanishing species can catch its breath and rebuild its ranks. Filter with methanol, and voila! But undercover cops have begun to sniff out these alternative-fuel users (the exhaust smells like french fries) and nail them for tax evasion. And while diesel cars can run well on such oils--so long as all the glycerin, water and other contaminants have...

...What sets Phu Quoc's nuoc mam apart is its ingredients and the islanders' know-how. Unlike competitors in Thailand and the Philippines, Phu Quoc's factories use only ca com, or long-jawed anchovies, eschewing competitors' methods of mixing other kinds of fish in with the ca com. The three-meter-high fermentation vats are made with special woods, which lend their own unique flavor to the sauce. The island's nuoc mam is so famous it has inspired would-be sauciers in Vietnam and further afield to trade illicitly on its tangy reputation. Nguyen Thi Tinh, president...
