...Singaporeans gather at the Dim Sake Bar - a name that reflects the venue's specialization in creative dim sum and Japanese rice wine. Patrons are greeted by 5,282 dim-sum baskets that line the wall, and can savor dishes such as grilled stingray fin with mayo and flying-fish-roe dip or xiao long bao shooters (a delicate soup dumpling sitting in a shot glass filled with warm chicken broth), as well as steamed fish worthy of a top Chinese restaurant. Those not in the mood for dim sum can seat themselves at a sushi counter...

...culture shock. At dinner in a small restaurant in the city of Xi'an, which my friends and I found only by deliberating avoiding the shopping mall, we discovered that a dish printed as “chickenfish” on the menu was actually a deep-fried fish covered in multicolored sprinkles and served with a large cherry in its mouth. Following that memorable dinner, we visited a school in a rural farming village, where farmers harvest crops by hand and still make arts and crafts using the same techniques they have employed for more than 40 years...

(There is a genetic component to [population] height, but there is very little genetic difference between European populations or their overseas offshoots.) America had a very resource-rich environment, with game, fish and wildlife. In fact we have data on disadvantaged people in America, such as slaves. They were obviously among the most mistreated populations in the world, but given the resource abundance - and given the fact that the slave owners needed their work - they had to be fed relatively decently...

What's more, you'd be left with a lot of hydrochloric acid to get rid of on land, while the changed ocean chemistry would surely kill a lot of fish--though only, says House, in the immediate vicinity of the electrolysis plants. "I would bet against any of this happening in the next half-century," House concedes. Still, he adds, "if global warming gets really bad, we could do it." Harvard has applied for a patent on the process just in case...
