Charlie Halleck is a true son of a state famed for its political gut fighting. By general tradition, an Indiana infant's first gurgles can be freely translated as: "I do not seek public office, but if in their wisdom the people see fit to elect me, then . . ." Rensselaer (pop. 5,500) is Halleck's boyhood town, a farming village in the northwest part of the state that inspired the song Back Home Again in Indiana. The seat of table-flat Jasper County, Rensselaer is as Republican as Vermont and twice as tough. Charlie's father. Lawyer...
Says M.I.T.'s Robinson: "Within their range, mutual funds can fit the need of almost any investor." They can also find a host of critics. Many critics charge that the funds, along with other institutional buyers, have needled the roaring bull market to artificial highs, that their constant buying, chiefly of blue chips, has helped create the present shortage of stocks. The funds' answer: they hold only 3.4% of all stock on the New York Stock Exchange, and do not hoard it; they turn their shares over faster than the exchange as a whole...
Fashion today has almost come to the point where it easily accepts Art Nouveau furnishings. In fact, Nouveau pieces often seem so modern that one finds it hard to believe that they were modish sixty years ago. The swatches of material designed by Richard Riemerschmid would fit wonderfully in a modern interior. The chair and three-legged table by Hector Guimard, the leader of the Parisian branch of the international Art Nouveau movement, combine tasteful flourishes with beautifully smooth wood surfaces and simple, elegant forms. In an elaborate Guimard picture frame, though, the typical Nouveau tendency towards overdecoration is manifest...
More material, though, is continually coming to the Museum. A ship is now carrying to Boston 38 wooden boxes of new specimens obtained by a Museum exhibition in Nicaragua. These will have to fit somewhere. The usefulness of this new Nicaragua collection, as well as some parts of the Museum's rarely used study material, is questionable. Though a Permanent Committee on Storage Space carefully weeds out many such useless items, this work requires anthropological research on a truly sweeping scale. The Museum does not have unlimited storage space, and the upkeep of a catalogue is complex and expensive enough...
...Roof, they live like animals. When Natale (Giorgio Listuzzi), a $1.50-a-day hod carrier, marries Luisa (Gabriella Pallotti), he takes her home to a two-room apartment owned by his brother-in-law and already occupied by four adults and three children. The newlyweds manage to fit their bed into a corner of the smaller room which they share with Natale's parents and his sister, who turns out to be a peeping tomboy. Some nights, just to get a little privacy, the honeymooners sneak out and make love in the side yard. In this human hutch-with...
