...sorry to note the mean spirit that shows itself in the laughter and jeers in which some persons have seen fit to indulge at the expense of the men trying for the University eleven. The work of the candidates is hard and trying even when they are encouraged by the men around them. But when their efforts are greeted with derision the work becomes tenfold harder and more discouraging. If anyone thinks that the work of the men deserves his jeers, nothing is easier than that he show his superiority by coming in the field and doing the work better...

President Barnard of Columbia College has seen fit in his last annual report to state his views on a subject which is now exciting much interest throughout the college world, namely, college athletics. President Barnard recognizes the fact that much can be said on each side of the question, but his conclusion is based on arguments not altogether satisfactory. ...sorry that the management of the base ball nine has not seen fit to explain the statement made in a recent communication, that a large number of reserved seats for the Yale game had been sold in advance of the public sale. The communication was entirely conrteous in its tone and it seemed to us that, in justice to the writer and the college at large, as well as to the management itself, it required an explanation of the facts as it stated them.
