Policy debate is structured around two-person teams. One person does mostly affirmative, one mostly negative. Everybody debates on the same issue all year, so eventually the arguments are tailored to fit a certain team’s style. Tournaments are long and intense. The first round is on Saturday at 8 a.m. or 8:30. One round of debate can take around 2.5 hours with four debates a day.
