...Manhattan's Metropolitan Opera House, an evening of sheer visceral joy was conjured up by Britain's Royal Ballet. The chief magician was Rudolf Nureyev, the company's conspicuous permanent guest artist. Following Kenneth MacMillan's disappointing Manon, which inaugurated the Royal's five-week New York-Washington, D.C. season, Nureyev scored a double success. He danced an impressive debut in the comic ballet La Fille Mal Gardée. On the other half of the program was a scene from La Bayardère, the "white ballet" he restaged at Covent Garden...
...earlier excesses, two appeals court decisions had thrown out not only the convictions of five of the seven for crossing state lines with intent to foment riots but also the 159 contempt citations handed down by Hoffman. The Government decided against retrying the riot charges, but U.S. Attorney James Thompson overcame the prosecutorial reluctance of superiors on the contempt issue because he believed that the obstructionist tactics of the defense during the first trial should not stand unpunished. After a five-week trial, Judge Gignoux concluded that only 13 of the contempt counts warranted convictions...
...September, twelve female nurses embarked upon a five-week routine of pedaling, dieting, spinning and bed rest at NASA'S Ames Research Center in California. They patiently endured such triumphs of technology as electronic heart monitors tucked into their bras and pill-sized sensors that transmitted temperature data from the vagina by way of a "bio-belt" worn around the waist. The experiment was designed to find out whether weightlessness and re-entry forces like those experienced by astronauts affect females more severely than males. To the delight of the test subjects-and of NASA critics who have charged...
Involved in the five-week program are twelve Air Force flight nurses (average age: 28). During the first two weeks, the subjects underwent testing on Ames' big centrifuges-whirling machines that simulate the increased gravitational forces experienced by astronauts on liftoff and reentry. Eight of the nurses were then given 14 days of total bed rest to approximate the effects of weightlessness (the other four nurses served as an ambulatory control). After a second test on the centrifuges in the last week of the experiment, the twelve women will be examined by doctors. Among other things, they want...
...acquainting old friends with his new works. Ten years ago, in his only previous visit to the U.S.S.R. in half a century, Balanchine and the members of his New York City Ballet sent shock waves of excitement through the Soviet dance world. Now they were back for a five-week tour of Kiev, Leningrad, Tbilisi, Moscow, Lodz and Warsaw. Everywhere the S.R.O. sign...
