...scene of the first act is a village on the Hardanger Fjord, Norway, at Yule-tide in the year 1000, while the people of the village are holding a Yule-tide festival. By a prevailing statute, Magnus Jarl, the head of the village, cannot retain his jarldom unless he finds a husband for his only daughter Sylvia, before the spring. Sigurd, a villainous youth, aspires to her hand, but when, urged by Olaf, he presses his suit, he is scorned by her. Sigurd, then makes advances to Sylvia's father, the Jarl, but is again repulsed.
