...television lights chased away the shadows and 4,700 people leaned forward in their pews as the President began his eulogy for Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. Seven days had passed since the plane crash in Croatia that killed Brown and 34 others, days filled with the high emotionalism of flag-draped coffins and sobbing families, and during that time, Clinton stretched his verbal gifts to the limit. At Dover Air Force Base when the dead came home, he gave the speech of his life, a psalm of patriotism, sacrifice and redemption. "Life is more than what we know," he said...
...cheesy tape recorder bellowed the national anthem over the loud speaker, the players on both teams lined up along the dugout or at their positions, put their hats over their chests, took a gallant "baseball player" stance, and stared at the flag. Some mouthed the words to themselves, some made equipment "adjustments" and some stared at the one red seat in the Fenway bleachers instead of at the flag...
...supporter of my nation, the United States of America, I find it ludicrous that Denver Nuggets basketball star Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf refused to acknowledge the playing of our national anthem. The United States does have a long distory of oppression, and oppression still goes on today, However, the American flag stands for much more than just oppression. Abdul-Rauf's refusal seems somewhat paradoxical as the perpetrator denounces his right to free speech while at the same time exercising it. Abdul-Rauf's display shows a great deal about his character; he is a self-interested hypocrite taking advantage of his celebrity status to gain increased attention. I do not ask Abdul-Rauf to love his country, merely...
Calling attention to the scurrilous elements of the Southern tradition is not merely regional prejudice or a needless rehashing of evils better forgotten. Those who acknowledge that the rebel flag is a detestable symbol but take umbrage when its legacy is discussed seem to prefer to wallow in escapism and denial. And those who still revere this flag have even less grounds to complain when I graphically recount the barbarism associated with it. If the South, and Georgia in particular, wishes to cling to the Confederate flag, then its heritage of shame cannot be glossed over...
