...failing public school system. But Governor Gray Davis devoted much of his State of the State address last week to more life-and-death matters. "All four hijacked planes were bound for California," said Davis, dressed in a blue shirt, a red tie and an American-flag lapel pin. "More than 100 fellow Californians paid the ultimate price for our freedom." In memory of those who died on Sept. 11--"to build a future worthy of their sacrifice"--he announced legislation designed to terrorproof the state. Local police, he said, need the same broad wiretapping authority the feds now enjoy...

...granite wall etched with 58,175 names, an antidote to the memory of nameless nightly body counts. Since then the experts have chronicled America's "casualty aversion" through Lebanon, Somalia, Kosovo. The first President Bush was so concerned about maintaining public support during the Gulf War that shots of flag-draped coffins arriving at Dover Air Force Base were banned. ...Judge Rosenthal was and is, by all accounts, a honorable type but the fact that she was appointed by George Bush Sr., had worked for Bush's old chief of staff James Baker at Baker Botts in Houston, and had owned Enron stock did raise a red flag among angry shareholders. Last week, after all, Rosenthal turned down a request to freeze the $1.1 billion gained by 29 Enron directors and officers on stock options even as shareholders and employees were losing their shirt. Baker, her old boss, had worked for Enron after he left the Bush White House...
