...catch? Blank music CDs are still expensive. CD-R music discs cost $6 to $10 apiece, CD-RW discs a whopping $18 to $25. That's thanks in part to a royalty agreement with the recording industry, which also requires that a special "copyright flag," or signal, be embedded on blank discs and that CD recorders accept only these flagged discs. That has kept the price of recordable CDs for music artificially high; virtually identical recordable CDs for computers by contrast are relatively cheap...
Your coverage of the shooting of two policemen in Washington's Capitol by a gunman left no stones unturned [NATION, Aug. 3]. The flag flew at half-staff to express Americans' concerns at the loss of these men, but maybe we should also mourn our justice system. Why should we spend effort, time and money to save the gunman's life, and perhaps pay attorneys to put him away for a couple of years? All this will be paid for by hardworking Americans, who would like to see this person put away where he belongs--in an unmarked grave...

One moment, midmorning shoppers and workers bustle along Nairobi's Haile Selassie Avenue at the downtown corner where a bronze eagle and a fluttering flag mark the five-story U.S. embassy. The next, the earth trembles as a thunderclap unleashes a mighty shock wave. Seconds later, black smoke plumes into the sky as the tarmac ignites, flashing fire to parked cars and passing buses. The blast shatters every window within a quarter-mile radius into lethal slivers, blows the bombproof doors off the embassy, sucks out ceilings...

When was the last time the decision makers of the U.S. deserved that feeling? Our government has always "asked" the sons and daughters of this country to uphold the values we believe in. What the government hasn't done is keep its end of the bargain, by placing a value on the lives of its servicemen and -women. Weeks before...
...white flag fluttered in my mind. Just in time, too. I ran up the driveway to greet my mother. This situation was a disaster. There was to be no future for Manly Man and me. Ah, well. Maybe Harvard men aren't so dull after...
