ADAPTATION-NEXT. Two one-acters, both directed with a crisp and zany comic flair by Elaine May. Miss May's own play, Adaptation, is the game of life staged like a TV contest. Terrence McNally's Next has James Coco in a fine performance as a middle-aged man undergoing a series of humiliating pre-induction examinations...
Probing deeper into the secrets of the atom, Gell-Mann and Physicist George Zweig then independently conceived a trio of basic building blocks out of which all the other particles -and, indeed, all matter-could be constructed. With his usual literary flair, Gell-Mann named these imaginary particles "quarks" (from James Joyce's cryptic line in Finnegans Wake: "Three quarks for Muster Mark!"). Gell-Mann cautioned that quarks might not exist outside his equations, but an Australian researcher recently reported finding them among the debris of atmospheric atoms broken up by cosmic rays (TIME, Sept. 12). ...skins have been newly shaped. Although some elegantly fitted furs have always been available for years, most designs were amorphous clumps, minimally styled and varying only in depth of cuff and the width of hem. Now, there are gently fitted capes and coats, designed with spare straight sleeves and narrow shoulders and waists that do not swaddle the figure but merely graze it. Now, in fact, there is fur that does the work of cloth...

Ar shile Gorky's disembodied forms, drifting poignantly amid the lyric whisperings of nature, have a kind of indescribable horror, like cancer in a beautiful girl. Edward Hopper's Gas is everybody's home town - and it is stifling with loneliness...
...original comic flair reappears briefly, and ironically, at the end of the film. Badly wounded and half-choked on their own blood. Butch and Sundance still keep up the banter and prepare to shoot it out with the local constabulary. They do not yet know that the Bolivian army, not a few policemen, are moving into position around their shelter. They blithely step outside into the volleys of hundreds of rifles. It makes for a macabre but funny death scene-not so maudlin as we were led to expect-and satirizes a similar scene from Bonnie and Clyde...
